Fast forward a month, and Traumfrau Zwei is upon us. Theme? Feminism, with Betty Friedan and Judith Butler adorning the posters. After a few Facebook discussions about potentially hosting a book fight (like a mud fight, but with paperbacks) I’ve promised to bring my camera, and whaddyaknow - Italian immigrant Roni und amici have built a makeshift library, with homemade bookshelf wallpaper, ten quid’s worth of fake specs from Primark and a load of borrowed zines. ‘A very intellectual dancefloor,’ say the posters…

The music is smile-inducing and perfect for dancing - rockabilly from Lonesome Em, guilty pleasures from Mrs Norman Knows and later on electropop from Nika Valentina, with a live act in the middle which I missed because I was queueing – first at the loo, then for the bar. The venue is small for the 350 strong crowd (a big increase on the first night, which was ram-jam full already) but I’d much rather a new endeavour was over- than under-attended. The city is crying out for a decent girls’ night, it would appear – and all ages were there at The Tube. Nice to see.

Despite Brighton’s reputation as a liberal haven, its history as royal playground and holiday resort doesn’t encourage a truly alternative gay scene – there’s no ‘underground’ to speak of, just the homogenous commercialisation and cultural bankruptcy you see everywhere else in the UK. Word to Roni, Giorgia and Jenny then, for creating a much-needed night of inclusive clubbing which so far succeeds in catering to the diverse tastes of the current LGBTQUW? population. Das ist gut, ja?

Most of my personal work focuses around the idea of community – what brings people together and what sets them apart. I’ve always used the word ‘enclave’ to describe the little part of Old Trafford I’ve lived in, because the Coronation Street-style architecture of the houses between Chorlton Road and Seymour Grove set it apart from the rest of this part of town, and because it really does feel like it’s own little multicultural hub. There is a religious building on every street, thriving corner shops whose owners know you by name (although not all the original ones are still in use) and the streets are too narrow for heavy traffic. To name but a few, Irish, Pakistani, Chinese, English, Scottish, Turkish and Polish people have made their homes here – a diverse demographic if ever there was one. Superficially, at least, everyone seems to get on. I’m not sure I’m interested in delving into the tensions that may exist under the surface. For now, this project is about the many different couplings we find ourselves in, the contrast between plants and man-made structures, and the intimacy we feel with the people that surround us.

Down the lane from Blue Anchor Cottage, we spotted this rubbish – seemingly just a pile of old clothes, but on closer inspection oversized white stilettoes, blonde wigs, tights and a large plastic breast.

I went back to photograph it later.
